THE NEW GUY |
|
Dizzy Harrison (D.J. Qualls Comic
Book Villains) is an unpopular geek at Rock Creek High School and after an
embarrassing accident with an erection, he decides to transfer schools but makes
an oath to be a new man at his new school. He meets Luther (Eddie Griffith
Undercover Brother, Double Take), a convict in a prison who decides to
help him and teach him how to be cool and intimidate people, but can he pull it
off when Rocky Creek students recognize him?
A few of the scenes in the movie actually managed to conjure
up some chuckles from me believe it or not including the statue burning and
scenes where Eddie Griffith is showing Dizzy how to give the nasty look that
scares people. D.J. Qualls is adequate giving the right amount ineptitude within
his character, letting the audience believe that he is a geek. Eliza Dushku (True
Lies, Wrong Turn) is a lot of fun to look at and she's mostly in the movie
for his romantic interest but she's a very interesting character. Zooey
Deschanel who was hilarious in her previous movies does her usual dead pan
one-liner sarcastic humor that I so utterly enjoy and she's a great addition to
the cast.
I remember the good ol' days when comedies
were actually funny and weren't used to display the hottest actors of the month
and such. This movie has barely any chuckles in it and has a ton of hokey cheesy
parts. Why the character Dizzy would perceive being a convict with popularity is
beyond me, and everyone else seems to believe it too, ultimately fearing him
because he appears in a Lecter-esque fashion in front of the entire school (how
convenient). The movie also has alot of these unnecessary, corny and basically
meaningless celebrity cameos from ex/ popular rappers and actors and such which
I saw no real reason for except to have people point and smile. The movie has
the most ridiculous scenes including Patton football scene and the "Brave heart"
scene that are meant to be hilarious but just come off as pathetic and tiresome.
The ending is also very safe and nauseating with the usual hoky,
let's-get-behind-the-dork moment that left me cringing in my seat. There are a
ton of plot holes that left me scratching my head an pretty damn frustrated. Why
couldn't they see the car pulling the motorcycle? Why did Nora get upset when
Dizzy pretended not to know them when she obviously knew he was pretending for
the popularity. Eddie Griffith was highly promoted as having a major role in the
move yet only appears for a good twenty minutes. His parts are probably the
funniest, but I felt they could have went longer and stretched his role out.
Zooey Deschanel (Big Trouble, The Good Girl) who was hilarious in The
Good Girl, Almost Famous and Big Trouble is grossly underused and mis-used with
her character and I never believed she would hang out with these guys nor would
she have any trouble making friends. She's ultimately wasted, sad to say. A lot
of the times when Dizzy posing as Gill is stuck in a corner there's always
something conveniently placed there to bring him out of it including the
motorcycle scene which pretty much has me screaming at the people who watched as
he was obviously being pulled by a car. Skinny dork in last high school changes
his hair color, grows a goatee and now he's the dangerous sexy skinny dork...
hmm, I don't see where he would change the most. If only life were that easy.
This is a lame, trite, contrived, and hokey
comedy with a horrible plot full of holes, and a lazy script that does nothing
but intends on taking people's money. Let's move on, shall we?
Mistakes:
- Continuity: While in the prison
being "revamped", Dizzy/Gil is shown getting a haircut and dye. Later in the
sequence, his hair is back to its original length and color.
